HEALTHY STEPS SPECIALIST

We are seeking a full time Healthy Steps specialist!

LOCATION ☼ Berkeley County First Steps’ office in Hanahan, SC, and
LOCATIONS ☼ MUSC Children’s Health Pediatrics in Moncks Corner and North Charleston

ABOUT BERKELEY COUNTY FIRST STEPS
Berkeley County First Steps is a nonprofit and community-focused organization committed to enhancing the lives of young children and families in Berkeley County. We are dedicated to providing high-quality early childhood education, support services, and resources that empower families and nurture children’s growth and development.

POSITION SUMMARY 
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented HealthySteps Specialist to join our team. This specialist will provide early childhood support services to the community at MUSC University Pediatrics clinics in accordance with the Berkeley County First Steps and HealthySteps model, standards and practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Developmental Health Education and Screening:

  • Works closely with the pediatric team and existing home visiting programs as resource for developmental and parenting concerns
  • Provide support and education to parents in subjects related to their child’s development including health, literacy, and education
  • Conducts office visits, either jointly with the provider or alone

Preventive and Responsive Care:
  • Promotes HealthySteps within the practices to families, providers and the community
  • Participates in First Steps/HealthySteps reflective supervision meeting
  • Conduct home visits as part of the Healthy Steps team and may accompany families to key medical, specialty, and community agency appointments as needed

Grant management:

  • Assist in grant proposal development and submission.
  • Monitor grant budgets, track expenditures, and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
  • Prepare grant reports and documentation for funders.

Referrals and Community Collaborations:

  • Creates and maintains community resource directory/database. Provide referrals and tracks follow-ups, as appropriate, to help families make successful connections to key resources within the community
  • Reaches out to community providers in position to share about Healthy Steps/Berkeley County First Steps and receive information to support referrals, warm handoffs, and ensure appropriate referral criteria are met
  • Convenes and participates in community-wide early childhood and/or health meeting

Team-Based Care:

  • Engages in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives to ensure the HealthySteps model is delivered with fidelity
  • Maintains open communication with all members of the HealthySteps and Berkeley County First Steps team
  • Works closely with pediatric primary providers around care coordination, goal setting, coaching and education about key aspects of a child’s development
  • Work closely with Program Director to assist in planning HealthySteps Community Convening

Caseload Tracking, Record Keeping, and Reporting:

  • Helps with the maintenance of the HS and SCFS databases withing data report required to meet HealthySteps fidelity metrics including both internal and external referrals
  • Collaborates with HealthySteps Implementation Team to complete required annual site reporting to the HealthySteps National Office at ZERO TO THREE
  • Presents at local, state, and nation meetings and conference on First Steps early childhood Health Initiations
  • Participates in administrative and clinical/reflective supervision meetings

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, early childhood education, or related field highly preferred
  • Must be bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Experience and knowledge about early childhood growth and development, parent-child relational health, infant and early childhood mental health, and family systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to working with underserved populations in a community setting
  • Strong motivational interviewing skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to take initiative and a willingness to learn
  • Ability to collect and enter data for program management, evaluation, and reporting purpose
